DAAD - IIT Master Sandwich Program Part 1.

In this post, I would like to concentrate more on things that need to be done after getting the scholarship.

First of all congratulation for all of you guys who got selected.

I would like to split this in to parts

                                1. Applying for Visa.
                                2. Booking Flight and Packing.
                                3. After Reaching Germany.

1. Applying for Visa.

It is very easy for DAAD scholarship holders to get visa. Try to book an appointment for visa as soon as possible because the embassies cities like Chennai, Mumbai are very busy. You might need to book an appointment at least a month ahead. For people in IIT KGP, Kolkata embassy is not very busy and you will get an appointment for next day as well. You will be given visa in one or two days (max a week if it s busy) in Kolkata embassy but I am not sure about the other ones as they are crowded, the processing could get delayed. If you get any problem in getting visa you can always contact the DAAD and they will help you.  You can apply only in the region where your home institute is based. Say if you are a student of IIT KGP but want to apply in Chennai you cannot do it. You can board your flights from any airports in India.

You should know the type of visa that you want to apply for. They have a Short Term Visa and a National Visa. As you will stay here for 7 months you should apply for National Visa (Long Term Visa).

Application Form:

You can find the application form for National Visa here.

The check list for required documents can be found here

FAQ:

What is meant by travel health insurance?

This is the insurance given by DAAD for your entire stay in Germany as it is compulsory for everyone. Once you accept the scholarship and upload the signed declaration, the letter of award and insurance details will be put up in the portal. You should download it from the DAAD portal and attach it with your application form.

Admission Letter.

Will be sent by the corresponding University.

No Objection Certificate (very important, not mentioned in the checklist).

Will be issued by the corresponding IIT.

Passport photo.

You should attach a picture in the application according to the German specifications. Most of the photo studios will know the size, so you just tell this is is for German visa, they will give you the appropriate size.

Proof of financial means.

The details of the scholarship awarded will be given in a letter along with the letter of acceptance it is enough to attach that. We need not show any bank account details or open one in Germany before coming here.

Visa Fee - waived for DAAD scholars.

Proof for Language Proficiency and Proof of payment - Not Needed.

Booking Appointment.

Appointment can be booked via mail or phone or online. You can book together for all of your friends via mail. Just mail them that you are this many people and you need to book an appointment. They will help you further.

Once you submit the application you will be given a bill (proof) which should be shown during the time of collecting your passports.

Time of Processing.

The time required for processing the visa depends on how busy the consulate is. So it is better to apply as soon as possible.

You will be asked to leave your passports and collect it while receiving the visa (visa is just stuck to a page of the passport).

Collecting Passport.

Once the visa is processed you will be mailed to come and collect it. If you are not able to go give an authorisation letter along with the bill that they gave during the appointment to your friends.

Flight ticket is not compulsory for visa.

P.S.We were asked to take two copies of all the documents while going to the embassy along with all the originals. They took whatever they wanted and returned other things and didn't see any original document. But this may not be the case everywhere so be sure to take everything and go.
