DAAD-IIT Master Sandwich Program Part 2

2. Booking a Flight and Packing.

It is better to book the flights as early as possible. If you have enough money you can book ticket for round trip or else book for one way. Return ticket can be booked from Germany.

Use incognito mode while checking for flights in websites as they track your cookies and increase the rate automatically.

I suggest booking flights together, it would be easier for people who fly for the first time.

Things that you have to look for while booking a Flight.

  Destination Airport.
Try to find flights for Airports which are near your destination University. But if the fare is higher for that airport compared to another airport make sure you have busses or trains or flights available to your place.

For people coming to Aachen, you can come either to Dusseldorf or Frankfurt airports. Dusseldorf is nearer to Aachen than Frankfurt but the fare is costlier than Frankfurt. So most of us took flights to Frankfurt and reached Aachen by Bus (Flixbus  https://www.flixbus.com).

 Lay Overs.
Try to book flights with the single lay over. This reduces the travel time. But if you find some cheaper flights with more layover go for it.

Baggage Allowance.
This this most important thing that you should look for. The cheaper the flight ticket the less you ca carry. Be sure to check the allowance for both the check in and hand luggage. The hand baggage should be 7kg and the check in baggage allowance should be 25-30kg.

Departure Date.
Keep in mind one thing no offices work on Saturday(super markets remain open on Saturdays) or Sunday except hotels, pubs, restaurants in Germany. If you reach here on weekends or some public holidays you might not be able to get to your key for the room from the housekeeper. Be sure to discuss with the contact person of respective universities regarding this.

As far as RWTH is concerned, you will not get the key for your apartment before September 1. So try to reach Germany on September 1. Irrespective of whether it is holiday or weekend the contact person would have arranged for someone (they are called buddies) to receive you and direct you to your apartments. The buddies will help you settle in and show you around the city, help you buy things and open bank accounts.

P.S. AirIndia has a student discount option where you will be allowed to carry more luggage. Try to avail it. In Aachen depending on the type of accommodation you  are provided you might need to bring more stuff. In shared kitchens you will have many common utensils so it is enough to bring cooker and a kadai (with laddles) for cooking. But if you are in a apartment with rooms with attached kitchens bring whatever stuff you think you would need.

Packing.

I would like to give an overview of contents in the baggage.

Necessary Clothes
Masalas
Utensils
Shoes
Medication

Clothes.

It won't be too cold for first two months but for us it could be pretty cold so bring a jacket and a couple of hoodies/sweaters. Scarf and gloves can be bought here but if you are sensitive to cold bring them with you. It rains a lot in Aachen so an umbrella will be helpful. You can bring whatever shoes you like but they won't be useful in winter, you need to get winter shoes after coming here. But for initial months our shoes are good enough. Bring enough thick cotton socks.

Masalas.

You need not bring a large quantity of masalas. You can always buy them here but 100 - 150g of any masala should be enough for 7 months. Make sure they won't break open.

I will give a list of masalas that I brought.

Medication.

If you like you can bring some basic/necessary medicines but be sure to have the prescription with you.

Liquid Bottles.

Try wrapping all the bottles in plastic covers to prevent any leaks. Need not bring cooking oil but if you want you can bring coconut oil. Whatever you bring try not break their seal to prevent them from leaking. Only hand baggage has a restriction of bottles up to 100 ml.Try to bring an empty water bottle to use here.
